Nearly done with our series of posts on test prep strategies. We didn’t want to forget about 7th graders, even though they get forgotten sometimes compared to the 8th graders, who are nearly ready for high school, and those 6th graders, who are just learning the whole middle school routine. Don’t let these guys slip through your fingers, because we need them marching right up through the grades and off to college!

We don’t often speak of middle school here, but it’s not like we’ve forgotten about our students once they leave and go to middle school. They, too, need test prep skills, perhaps more since their social lives have taken front seat compared to just about everything else. Help your 6th graders get ready by reviewing all those key skills they’ve probably let slip into disuse.

First grade and second grade, at least in Florida, have SAT 10 tests, which build toward FCAT tests in higher grades. Other states have some version of standardized testing, either for odd numbered grades, or for specific set grades. The common theme here, is that standardized testing is a necessary and unavoidable evil in today’s world. We’d be serving our students best by preparing them for testing that they will see for the next two decades of their lives if we started off well in 1st grade. Here are some printables to get you started on that path.

The most important things that first year of school is knowing your numbers, your letters, maybe a few colors, and possibly how to write your name. That shoe-tying thing is somewhere in there as well. Sadly, a lot of kids come to school unable to identify or say their letters, so we’ve got to get them caught up. Do a series of pretests, assessments, and post tests to determine success and growing familiarity with letters. Our free resources will help!
