It’s hard to compare to Christmas or your birthday when you’re a little kid, but maybe we can push one of the other holidays onto them as a close 4th or 5th (Halloween’s teeth-rotting experiences can’t compete). New Years is often considered a new beginning in many cultures. Maybe a fresh start at school, leaving behind the not-getting-homework-done work ethic or not-gonna-like-anyone sort of attitudes, might be advisable. Embrace the new year with some resolutions meant to be kept and some fun activities from have fun teaching. Maybe your best kids will get better, and the ones who really need to change might come around with them.

I can almost taste the feminine bitterness my warm Father’s Day post left behind. Mothers were left fuming, and people have written off my posts forever! Not to let hard feelings go unaddressed, I’ve gotten around to posting about the other wonderful half of the parenting world: Mothers! Never to be forgotten for all those sandwiches with crusts cut off packed in brown bags, all that laundry done so we weren’t smelly kids, all the soothed hurts and bandaged knees, I wanted to make sure we posted about Have Fun Teaching’s Ode to Motherhood, done via worksheets and activities that most certainly have a place on fridges everywhere. Thanks Mom!

Memorial Day is one of our most important national holidays. Most countries have something similar, a day to honor our fallen soldiers. This seems like an amazing opportunity to teach our young minds to respect the sacrifices others have made to give them the opportunities they now have. In addition to social studies lessons or writing letters of thanks to our soldiers or to local branches of our armed forces, it might be good to take a look at some of the patriotic-themed activities have fun teaching offers.

May Day is another holiday we don’t hear much about here in the U.S.A., but in other countries, especially Europe, there is a long tradition behind the holiday. Explore the cultural roots, the political meanings, and the fun aspects of the festival as well. As I’ve been saying often lately, these holidays are a teaching tool for social studies and cultural awareness. Don’t forget there are a lot of weird or unknown little holidays out there, too. Have students look up calendars of them or design their own holiday! Or, stick to some ready-made goodies from have fun teaching.

Continuing our holiday themed posts here, we’re talking this time about one of the most celebrated festivals in all of America, a very important cultural event for New Orleans and the southern half of the U.S.: Mardi Gras. More than just tossing bead necklaces around the classroom, you can delve into the social and cultural meanings behind the festival, and have a lot of fun coloring pages or doing activities with your students.

Labor Day, a day we mostly get off from school. So, what to do? How about on the Friday before, or the Tuesday after, starting off with some morning work or dismissal work about the holiday? Isn’t it only fair they do a little work about Labor Day? I don’t know if they’ll appreciate that sentiment, but a few short sentences or an essay about what they will do or what they did for Labor Day on the back of one of these activities would be a great way to tie in writing, too.

Need to know a bit more about Hanukkah? Admittedly, most of what I know comes from South Park, Adam Sandler, and other TV Shows. Sad, I know, but why not honor the holiday, especially as a social studies lesson or as a cultural awareness lesson? Or, when other students are doing their Christmas or Kwanzaa stuff, Jewish students could still participate in the holiday season with Hanukkah activities. I know I’m missing a few more winter religious holidays, and all together you could have quite holiday season of fun!
