I love maps. I always have. I used to peruse social studies books for maps of troop movements, empire expansions, and all that stuff that dorky kids love. Get your own students to let their inner map nerds out! Encourage them with map studies, or free activities like the one shown here, where they get to learn their directions on a compass rose.

Nothing says fun like an inventors fair! Even better, have students invent something made only from recycled junk laying around the house. Now we’re talking environmental science, social studies, and a sort of science fair all at once. Add in some writing and a speech to go with it, and you have grades in 3 or 4 subjects!

Getting away from the religious holidays, we go back into our nation’s holidays with President’s Day. Depending on where you’re from, this could either be just Washington’s birthday or a day to remember Washington and Lincoln. Regardless, this is a great piece of national pride and history in February, getting our minds of that candy-filled holiday just a week or so before. Teach your students about our first president or all of our presidents, using some quick little activities that would surely be a great part of a presidents’ booklet.

Continuing our holiday themed posts here, we’re talking this time about one of the most celebrated festivals in all of America, a very important cultural event for New Orleans and the southern half of the U.S.: Mardi Gras. More than just tossing bead necklaces around the classroom, you can delve into the social and cultural meanings behind the festival, and have a lot of fun coloring pages or doing activities with your students.

Labor Day, a day we mostly get off from school. So, what to do? How about on the Friday before, or the Tuesday after, starting off with some morning work or dismissal work about the holiday? Isn’t it only fair they do a little work about Labor Day? I don’t know if they’ll appreciate that sentiment, but a few short sentences or an essay about what they will do or what they did for Labor Day on the back of one of these activities would be a great way to tie in writing, too.

Or, maybe you are, but want something for them to work on while they laugh at you in your Sesame Street or poor attempt at Pirates of the Caribbean costume? Check out these fun activities! Seriously, though, if your kids get into it, and you can go to school dressed like a ninja, why not? It’s the one day a year you can really be silly, so ham it up and have a good time with the kids.

Need to know a bit more about Hanukkah? Admittedly, most of what I know comes from South Park, Adam Sandler, and other TV Shows. Sad, I know, but why not honor the holiday, especially as a social studies lesson or as a cultural awareness lesson? Or, when other students are doing their Christmas or Kwanzaa stuff, Jewish students could still participate in the holiday season with Hanukkah activities. I know I’m missing a few more winter religious holidays, and all together you could have quite holiday season of fun!
