Comparing and contrasting are key skills in language. Synonyms and antonyms are an easy, language-building approach to learning comparing and contrasting. It also helps build vocabulary when students realize that there is not only one antonym for each word, that words aren’t simply paired together, but actually massive families of similar words. Have your K-5 students look at some of these worksheets on have fun teaching to see which words they can identify as opposites.

I can imagine how this might tie into activities where students alphabetize their classmates by first or last names, or where students alphabetize a collection of books. Need an excellent primary resource to start the year off? How about an alphabet booklet? From A-Z, Have Fun Teaching has pages for each letter, with the letter in upper and lower case and a word that starts with that letter. It’s a great little phonics and letter recognition practice booklet. I can imagine how much kids would love to color their pages and even write more words they learn starting with those letters on them, creating their own little dictionaries. Sounds like a good cooperative learning or ESOL activity as well.
