Counting By Twelves Song

Can you believe we made it? You endured twelve awful posts with horrible rhymes, although I did kind of like number eleven. Sometimes it’s hard to write interesting things about a topic, just like it’s often hard to make a topic interesting when you teach. That’s why I tried to have fun with it. I’m sure your students appreciate the silly and absurd approach sometimes, too. Anyway, after you see this final post about skip-counting songs, I hope you really do check out all the math songs on have fun teaching…

Twelve is such a hard word to rhyme.
But twelve is so common in time.
Twelve is such a hard word to use.
But twelve can be quite a muse!

Ahh, number 8. What is there to say about this number? I’m not quite certain, but I know that have fun teaching made a song about it. It’s likely much more educational than this rhyme…

Eight friends went out on a dates.
Eight dinners were set out on plates.
Eight desserts were brought out way later.
Eight friends left no tips for the waiter.

And into the second half of my rhyming posts about have fun teaching’s set of skip-counting we go, this time with a seven’s rhyme…

Seven goatherds went to heaven,
But they had once been eleven.
Four goatherds they left behind,
Just in case the goats got out of line.

Fives are next, and we’re nearly halfway done with these rhymes, which you might be able to tell is not my strongest suit. Anyway, after you’ve had a chuckle at my poor assemblage of words, head on over for some auditory delight at have fun teaching’s math songs section.

How many fingers have you got? Five.
How many toes have you got? Five.
How many eyes have you got? Two.
Wait.
I thought this rhyme was about five?

I will continue to punish your eyes and lyrical senses with another poor rhyme about the number four. Hopefully you’ll be inspired to run away from this blog and right over to the downloads section of have fun teaching!

Four times, I shut the door.
Four times, teddy dog opened it once more.
Four times, I yelled at the beast.
Four times, his tail slapped happily at my feet!

Continuing my series of posts on skip-counting songs, I’m writing a short lyric about the number 3 this time. Keep in mind that the songs you’re going to get from have fun teaching are much better than my distracting words! I’m just trying to keep things fresh here, and it might be good to challenge your students to write number songs, too!

Meep, meep, we’re three streets away!
Beep, beep, been stuck in traffic all day!
Bleep, bleep, move that car out of the way!
Whew. Guess I should watch what I say.

Continuing my series of posts about have fun teaching’s skip counting songs, I wanted to focus on the number 2 this time:

Two, two, I have two shoes.
Boo, hoo, I lost a shoe.
Woo, WOO, I found it by a pole.
Oh, No, it’s got a big hole!

Skip Counting Songs

Counting is a huge skill in the first few years of school. What many don’t understand is that the patterns in skip counting also helps in multiplication. Practice skip counting with have fun teaching’s skip-counting songs. They have everything from 1’s to 12’s, as well as other math songs. One of the easiest ways to teach this is to have students loud and silent clap numbers.
For example, when counting by 3’s, soft-clap 1, 2, loud clap 3, soft-clap 4, 5, loud clap 6… and so on.
